CHARACTER INFO
Character: Miles "Tails" Prower
Canon: Sonic the Hedgehog IDW comics, taken from the very end of issue 75, right when he and Sonic are returning to his lab after the fallout of the Clean Sweepstakes.
Age: 14 (... is what I'm sticking with. In IDW, he lives on his own and he's capable enough that his friends treat him as an adult. He's young, but he's written as just-starting-teens young, not grade school young.)
Background Information: Sonic Wiki link
Personality:
Sonic's sidekick — in two words, that's how everyone views Tails. Ever since they first met, the cool hedgehog has been this fox's idol, and since then he's proved himself to be the blue blur's loyal friend and capable ally. They're a true dynamic duo, where his insight and kindness are a natural compliment to his best friend's courage and determination. That's not to say anyone thinks Tails can't handle things on his own, and in fact he's also earned a reputation as a pint-sized genius — but even as he's stepped more out of Sonic's shadow, he's still more comfortable a few steps behind the blue blur than taking the lead.
The reason why can be found in Tails' greatest flaw: He struggles with self-confidence. Being born with two tails made him an easy target for bullies, and the constant teasing made him feel shy and insecure around other people. Thus, when he saw how cool and confident Sonic was, he did his best to emulate it — and when Sonic had faith in him, he found it far easier to have faith in himself. Since then, Tails has done a fairly good job internalizing that confidence, and has grown from being cripplingly timid to merely humble. He can even be outspoken now, especially when he's speaking on behalf of others! But that anxiety can still rear its ugly head when things start getting tough, and he'll often look to friends for support.
He's also comfortable when the discussion is about a topic he knows very well — and there's quite a few of those, all falling under the broad umbrella of engineering. He's been an inventor for longer than he's been a sidekick, reflecting his deep love of mechanics and science. In fact, he's even gotten starry-eyed over a few inventions made by Dr. Eggman — though that alone hasn't stopped him from busting up Badniks. When simply smashing robots won't do, he's often called upon by his friends to figure out another way to hack or destroy Eggman's work. For example, when Dr. Eggman unleashed the metal virus on the world and nearly turned the entire living population into zombots, Tails poured his everything into making a vaccine (and succeeded, even if the research was soon lost).
After all, unlike Dr. Eggman — and in fact, unlike many scientific geniuses — Tails is wise beyond his years, and deeply compassionate towards other people. He likes teamwork and helping other people, and is only interested in fighting anyone if it's to stop them from causing greater harm. One of the best examples of this is when he encountered Kit, a rival fox who Tails could tell was deeply troubled. While Sonic was busy snarking at Kit's partner, Tails calmly talked his enemy down and nearly managed to make peace then and there. And when things came to blows anyway, Tails outsmarted and neutralized him by making him use up his power source, settling things as peacefully and easily as possible. He's a nice person, and he likes being a nice person.
... of course, he is a bit of a copycat, and so some of Sonic's snark has rubbed off on him. He has a few cheeky moments, and these are especially noticeable when Sonic himself is around. (What kind of friends would they be if they couldn't joke with each other?) But around most other people, he's polite and upbeat, an upstanding little guy.
Abilities & Inventory:
Tails' most iconic ability is that he can fly. His two tails can rotate freely around each other, turning him into a pint-sized helicopter that can support the weight of one other person. This has a built-in nerf in the form of his stamina, however: It tires him out, so he can only go for a few minutes or so before he needs to land and catch his breath. The longer he tries to sustain flight, and the more weight he's carrying, the more winded he gets. He can go further on his own and in shorter hops, but even under the best circumstances, he wouldn't be able to handle a long flight over the ocean.
He can also use those spinning tails to propel himself forward, essentially giving him a mini jet engine to help him keep up with Sonic's superhuman velocity. Between that and his years of practice running and parkouring around with Sonic, he's developed speed and reflexes that require superhuman skills to top.
On the other hand, he absolutely outpaces Sonic — and almost everyone else, for that matter — in intelligence. He has a vast well of STEM knowledge, is an accomplished inventor and mechanic, can pilot multiple vehicles like planes and cars, has built and piloted a mech that can transform into a plane or car... the list goes on. He can be considered at least as smart as Dr. Eggman, held back by a lack of experience and a higher sense of ethics. He's also experienced in using his brains out in the field, learning and adapting quickly by watching his opponents, and acting as the team's tactician in larger conflicts.
All he's bringing with him is what he was wearing, which is actually slightly different at his exact canon point! As best seen here, he's wearing gloves and shoes — which are in a more sportswear style than he usually wears — along with a pair of sports goggles. And that's it! No tech, not even the board he's riding in that panel. He'll be starting from scratch!

ARMADA SELECTION
Corsairs
The first reason is — cards on the table? Sonic's there, and it's literally a core piece of Tails' character that he tags along with Sonic whenever possible. So if he started on the Paladins side, he'd just end up looking to transfer over anyway.
Regardless, the Corsairs are a better fit for Tails because like them, he believes in letting people act independently and stay true to their own codes. His research methods might ring true to the Paladin-style methodology, but also to the Corsair spirit of exploration — and he certainly doesn't share the Paladins' interest in cultivation. Thanks to his early years as a bullied misfit, his vision of a better world are rooted in understanding and accommodating differences, not in mandated conformity.
